This common brain injury is caused by an impact to the head or upper body. A concussion interferes with brain function and the head injury may lead to an initial loss of consciousness. Common causes are sports injuries, car accidents or work accidents. In most cases the effects are mild and temporary, and the concussion does not cause permanent injury. But a concussion is a serious injury that can cause lasting brain damage or death if not treated properly.
Concussion can cause a variety of symptoms that can last for days, weeks, or even months. The symptoms of concussion include:
- headache
- dizziness
- confusion
- tiredness
- memory problems
- difficulty concentrating
Most patients with concussion will have a CT or MRI scan of their brain to rule out any serious injury to the brain. The treatment for concussion usually involves observation in hospital, rest, cognitive rehabilitation, physiotherapy and occupational therapy.
